OPERATIONS WINEMAKER

A rare opportunity to join one of England’s leading sparkling wine producers.

Hattingley Valley has been producing award-winning sparkling wine since 2010, having planted its first vineyard in 2008. The heart of the wine comes from our 24ha of vineyards here in Hampshire where we carefully manage two distinct vineyard sites. Growing the classic sparkling varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier we also have small parcels of Bacchus, Pinot Noir Précoce and Pinot Gris. In addition to this we take in grapes from across the UK for both our own production and on behalf of contract winemaking clients. We are looking for an Operations Winemaker to take us to the next level of efficiency, productivity and quality.

Reporting to the Head Winemaker, the right candidate will have a passion for high quality sparkling winemaking along with a desire to meet the unique challenges that our climate brings.

Major Duties and Responsibilities:

To work with the Head Winemaker and Production Manager in planning and supervising the daily operations in the cellar including: harvest operations, tirage, cleanliness, quality management, organisation of the riddling and disgorging schedules, labelling and packaging of finished goods for Hattingley Valley and our clients.

Essential Skills:

  • A degree in Oenology or Fermentation Science is essential

  • 4-5 years’ experience working with traditional method sparkling wines throughout the process

  • An aptitude for problem solving and attention to detail is essential

  • Ability to work under pressure

  • A flexible approach to working hours during critical times such as harvest and bottling is essential

  • Forklift licence essential – telehandler licence an advantage

  • Ability to manage and inspire your team

  • Confidence and communication skills to impart knowledge to consumers and trade visitors at tours and events

APPRENTICE WINEMAKER

The UK’s first Winemaking Apprentice has successfully completed her two-year apprenticeship at Hattingley Valley Wines and is now a full-time member of the winemaking team, so we are excited to announce a second opportunity
to join this dynamic industry in partnership with the Vintners’ Company, Enotria & Coe, and the Wine & Spirit
Education Trust

England’s wine industry has exploded over the last few years with no sign of abating. An inevitable outcome of this is a shortage of skilled workers in the vineyards and wineries. There is of course a seasonal nature to the work but more and more full-time positions are required.

In order to encourage young people to get involved in this exciting and dynamic industry, Hattingley Valley has teamed up with the Vintners’ Company for a second time to offer a winemaking apprenticeship.

The successful applicant will be sent on courses in vine-growing and winemaking at Plumpton College, England’s centre of learning for wine production, and to the Wine & Spirit Education Trust (WSET) to gain a wider appreciation for the world of wine. Our UK agent, Enotria&Coe, will fund WSET up to Level 2 with the WSET itself sponsoring Level 3.

In addition, the successful candidate will be trained on the job by working alongside our award-winning winemaking team.

This will include operation of all the key machinery used in a sparkling wine winery: presses, riddling equipment, disgorging kit, labelling machines, pumps, filters and heat exchangers. Forklift training will be provided. A crucial part of the training will be tasting and blending the young wines with the winemakers to make both our award-winning wines and those of our client vineyards.

You would earn the UK living wage as a full-time employee for the length of the apprenticeship which could extend to two years, and the Vintners’ Company will sponsor your training costs during this time.

Once completed the apprentice should be very employable in any winery around the world or within England and Wales; indeed, this could be an opportunity to work and travel in the long-run, or the skills learnt could transfer to the wine trade.

Due to our rural Hampshire location and the need to attend training courses in Sussex the candidate will need to have independent transport.

No prior experience is required, nor any qualifications necessary although an ability to communicate clearly, listen and follow instructions carefully is vital. TOUR MANAGER

Hattingley Valley is one of the leading producers of English sparkling wine in the country and will be increasing its tours for the public and corporate events in 2019. Therefore, we are looking for someone who will run every aspect of the tour side of the business.
